The Wiz Live gave us everything we were looking for especially in the area of natural hair and textured hairstyles! The show aired Last Thursday on NBC. My favorite part as far as natural hair was concerned included the scene with the munchkins. While Dorothy (Shanice Williams) was being made aware of The Wiz, we saw a host of colorful natural hairstyles that included:

The munchkins weren't the only ones who rocked natural and textured hairstyles on the The Wiz Live!. Stephanie Mills, who played Auntie Em, wore hair hair in a tuck and roll style. Shanice Williams, who played Dorothy, wore her hair in a curly style. David Alan Grier, who played the Cowardly Lion, wore dreads. Mary J. Blige, who played Evillene, wore her hair in small cornrows that went into an updo. The updo was covered partially by a hat. I thought her costume was too fly! Lastly, Uzo Aduba played Glinda, and wore her hair in a big and beautiful braided bun style.

In addition to the munchkins and main cast rocking natural hair, there were different textured hairstyles shown throughout the show including in the Emerald City and after Evillene's death.The Wiz (1978) movie is one of my favorites of all time. I've watched it since I was a kid, and I remember how excited I was when I first saw it. I can only imagine how kids watching the Wiz Live 2015 play must feel. It is great that many of the characters, especially Dorothy (Shanice Williams) rocked natural and textured hairstyles, because it sends the message that natural hair is beautiful! I thought the whole production was fantastic. It made me very proud of us as the Black community. Phenomenal job!
