Singer and actress, Amber Riley has been giving us black girl magic all over social media, representing the beauty of melanin and natural hair. She embraces her curves unapologetically, and I love it! It's important to go against the culture of many reality television shows and other forms of media where fake breasts, super skinny bodies, and lip/butt injections are seen as beautiful.They often send the message that any other thing is more beautiful than yourself. Riley played in Glee and Being Mary Jane. Recently, she starred as Addapearle in The Wiz! Live.

A while back, Amber Riley posted a picture of herself wearing a puff. Her caption was this: I used to pray for straight hair and blue eyes. Now I'm like wtf was I thinking?!? That's beautiful too, but it just ain't ME! Lol These brown eyes and naps are IT 💁🏾 #blackgirlmagic …  Underneath the photo, many of Riley’s fans agreed with her and shared their own experiences. Instagram user, @chardaegreen said, “Same I used to pray for anything but my curly natural hair due to bullying [sic] but now I’m proud of my hair and [sic] I wouldn’t change it for anything in the world.” Her words show why it is needed for celebrities, especially those of Black women to promote self-love.
Our contributor, Kimberly J. Childs wrote an article called A Nappy Girl’s Prayer last year that highlighted the same feelings as both Riley and her fan about their natural hair. Childs, like the other two young women realized the beauty in their own hair.


Amber Riley, along with celebrities like Zendaya, Amandla Stemberg, Lupita Nyong’o, and  Viola Davis have used social media and other outlets to redefine beauty standards by making statements, posting pictures of themselves with natural hair, or without makeup. It lets their fans know they are real people too, and real is beautiful!

But, what about people of other races attempting to make their hair kinky or textured like that of African-Americans? Afro perms, along with other Black hairstyles have been a long time trend in Asia. Because Asian hair grows naturally straight, the afro perm gives the hair a textured look. Priscilla Shirer Shares Her Natural Hair Story and Tips on IG Live!

Actress and minister of Going Beyond Ministries Priscilla Shirer shared her natural hair story and secrets on IG Live today. After receiving numerous questions about her long thick natural hair, she decided it was time to do a video. Shirer said, "I've decided that sometimes, to a woman, hair = ministry." Shirer started getting a perm at about 13 years old. During previous years, her mother would use the hot comb to straighten her hair. When Shirer was 24 years old, she noticed a circular patch of hair that had broken off on the side of her head. After she visited a doctor and they plucked a few strands from different parts of her hair, the doctor concluded that Shirer's hair was growing in healthy. However, it was something that she was doing to her hair that was making it break off. As a result, her doctor told her to stop relaxing her hair for 6 months.
