Mushiya Gives Military Women Fashion and Natural Hair Makeovers (photo cred: Brainchild Associates) |
On January 11th, 2016, WEtv star of Cutting It: in the ATL and Runway Curls owner, Mushiya Tshikuka hosted a natural hair and fashion makeover day for women in the U.S. military and veterans. The event was called #NaturalsStandTall and featured 7 makeovers and a discussion about natural hair regulations in the military. After the women received their makeovers, they were given the chance to show off their new looks in a fashion show.
Tshikuka, who is also owner of the The Damn Salon collaborated with the Minority Women Veterans Organization (MWVO) for the event. MWVO's "Glamming Forward" campaign director Nyrea Liferidge and spokesperson/image consultant Monique Sellers-Greene both participated in the natural hair conversation hosted by Tshikuka. Both Greene and Liferidge are U.S. military veterans. The women talked about struggles in the military with natural hair and equipment worn, like gas masks that can cause breakage to natural strands. They also talked about natural hair regulations.
NWVO's "Glamming Forward" campaign includes buying a subscription box for a woman in the military. She can then purchase a box to give to another woman who is on active duty or a military veteran. The purpose of the "Glamming Forward" campaign is to provide women who are on active duty or veterans with beauty products that otherwise wouldn't be available to them. Runway Curls will be donating 5% of their proceeds to the "Glamming Forward" cause up until the 31st of this month.
