Hair Love Short Film by Matthew A. Cherry Wins Oscar!

Tonight, the short film Hair Love by Matthew A. Cherry won an Oscar for Best Animated Short at the 92nd Academy Awards at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles, California!  The Sony Pictures movie competed against 4 other short films in the category.

 Hair Love is about a little African-American girl name Zuri whose father, Stephen learns how to do her natural hair. Cherry took to Twitter to express his excitement! He posted his original speech and a cute photo of Zuri hugging an Oscar. His caption said, "Thank you. ðŸ’œ #HairLove #Oscars." He also dedicated his award to Kobe Bryant, who was the first athlete to win in that category for Dear Basketball.

We first told you about Hair Love in 2017 when Cherry surpassed his campaign goal on Kickstarter. Since then, the Hair Love book has been published and a short film released. Vashti Harrison is also the co-author and illustrator. Hair Love hit theaters in 2019 playing alongside The Angry Birds Movie 2. Earlier this month, Matthew A. Cherry announced the film would play before Jumanji: The Next Level in theaters.

Some interesting facts about "Hair Love" is that Issa Rae plays Zuri's mom. Some of the film's Co-Executive Producers include Jordan Peel, Yara, and her mom Keri Shahidi. Both Gabrielle Union-Wade and Gabourey Sidibe are also Assistant Producers on the film. If the film reminds you a bit of The Proud Family, it might be because Bruce W. Smith who is the creator of The Proud Family and animator of The Princess and the Frog is one of the producers of Hair Love

Priscilla Shirer Shares Her Natural Hair Story and Tips on IG Live!

Actress and minister of Going Beyond Ministries Priscilla Shirer shared her natural hair story and secrets on IG Live today. After receiving numerous questions about her long thick natural hair, she decided it was time to do a video. Shirer said, "I've decided that sometimes, to a woman, hair = ministry." Shirer started getting a perm at about 13 years old. During previous years, her mother would use the hot comb to straighten her hair. When Shirer was 24 years old, she noticed a circular patch of hair that had broken off on the side of her head.
