1BN Kids: Little Sister, Big Twist-Out Ponytails

1BlessedNatural: 1BN Kids: Little, Sister, Big Twist-Out Ponytails Happy Thursday, my blessed naturals! Today I wanted to share with you Little Sister Natural's (LSN) big twist-out ponytails from about a month ago. Her mom kept her hair in 4 large braids for 1 or 2 days. Afterwards, she unraveled them and applied a small amount of Cantu Curl Activator. You already know LOL, Little Sister Natural was not feeling the fact that she had to get her hair done, but she loved her results! LSN's protective styling is helping to keep her and her sister's hair healthy and long . 1BlessedNatural: Little Sister Natural's hair was almost done, and she couldn't wait! Little Girl Cut Off Doll's Hair to Go Natural

1BlessedNatural: Little Girl Cut Off Doll's Hair to Go Natural (photo cred: Facebook) Sunday, Brittany Jones got a big surprise when she saw that her daughter had cut off all of her Princess Tiana doll's hair. When Jones asked why she did it, the little girl replied 'she went natural.' Mom said she was speechless and gave the doll back to her. Hilarious! Jones shared the photo of the doll on Facebook. It sounds like the little girl may have watched YouTube videos of people doing their Big Chop, or maybe Jones herself performed one(smile). Either way, her daughter had that process down pat! It is clear she sees the beauty in natural hair, and that is an awesome thing! Good job, Mom! Please tell your daughter that I said Princess Tiana looks good with her new do! I asked my daughter what happened to Tiana's hair, and she said "she went natural." Posted by Brit...

1BN Contributor: Top 5 Funny Reactions to My Shrinkage

1BN Contributor: Top 5 Funny Reactions to My Shrinkage ( photo cred: ABC/ Black-ish ) Kimberly J. Childs  As naturals, we know how to give ourselves a complete hair makeover, by simply washing it, and wearing it “out”. I’m about to use the "S" word, Shrinkage. I have gotten many funny reactions to my hair shrinkage, and I know you have too! Here are the top 5 reactions to my shrinkage... “Oh wow, did you get a haircut?” This one by far, is the the most popular reaction to my wash and go styles. I will go from super stretched, day 4 hair, to shrinkage that makes me look like I got a haircut; or 2.  It is so hard to explain this to people, especially when they don’t have our texture of hair!  So my quick answer is,” I washed it, let it air dry, and this is what happens.” It is tough for people to fathom this. One guy responded with, “So let me get this straight, every time you wash your hair, it gets shorter??!”. “What happened to your hair...

Digging Deeper Into Zendaya's Call Out of Modeliste Magazine for Retouching Photos

11BlessedNatural: Digging Deeper Into Zendaya's Call Out of Modeliste Magzaine for Retouching Photos (photo cred: Facebook) Tuesday, actress Zendaya called out Modeliste Magazine for retouching one of her photos for their November 2015 issue. The actress's thighs and torso were airbrushed to look smaller. The K.C. Undercover star took to social media to voice her concerns. In response to the retouched photo, she said, "These are the things that make women self conscious, that create the unrealistic ideals of beauty that we have." The young actress continued by saying, "...I took it upon myself to release the real pic (right side) and I love it..." She then thanked the magazine for pulling the issue with the retouched photos. In response to Zendaya's words, the editor of Modeliste Magazine, Amy McCabe wrote a letter (which was published on the magazine's website) explaining that after reviewing the retouched photos, she made the deci...

New Video: Using Banana Clips to Preserve My Twist-Out

Happy Saturday, my blessed naturals! The one complaint I hear from naturals the most is they are tired of twisting their hair every night. A while back, I let you all in on 3 quick alternatives to bedtime twists . Now, I have 1 more to add to the list. Lately, I haven't really been in the mood to do my hair, so twisting every night is not an option. I use banana clips or combs to style and preserve my twist-outs overnight. Check out the video below! You can comment, like, rate, and subscribe if you like :-) 1BlessedNatural: My twist-out in a banana clip Are you tired of twisting your natural hair every night? 15 Scientific Names for Common Ingredients in Natural Hair Products

1BlessedNatural: 15 Scientific Names for Common Natural Hair Product Ingredients (photo cred: shalommama via Flickr under CC by 2.0 ) Happy Wednesday, my blessed naturals! In all of my product junkiness (if that’s a word), I’ve learned a few things about the scientific ingredients in many natural hair products. As a result, I’ve decided to compile a list of 15 of them from some of the natural hair products I own. Often, you will find that the actual names of these ingredients will be in parentheses next to the scientific names on the product label. For example: Coconut Oil (written below) would be written as Coconut (Cocos Nucifera) Oil. I've also seen labels with the scientific or Latin names written first. The label regulations for the backs of products are by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and are the International Nomentclature of Cosmetic Ingredients (INCI) names to help us, as buyers recognize the ingredients. This can really come in handy when...

1BN Contributor: A Nappy Girl's Prayer

1BN Contributor: A Nappy Girl's Prayer (photo cred: Pink Sherbert Photography via Flickr by CC by 2.0 ) Kimberly J. Childs " Dear God, when I wake up in the morning, please let me wake up with White girl's hair, Amen." This was the prayer I prayed nearly every night as a child. Not "Dear God, please let me get a bike for Christmas." or "Dear God, please let Derrick sit next to me at lunch." As a child, I was so dissatisfied and miserable with ME, that I bombarded Heaven, with HAIR PRAYERS! Growing up a Black girl in the 1980’s meant a few things. 1. You were likely taught that “new growth” was the devil, ugly, and you should rebuke it (Or at least greeeze it down). 2. You were VERY likely sitting in front of your Momma or Grandma’s stove on Saturday nights, about to feel the fire from that hot comb. 3. When the fear of that evil hot comb became too much to bear, you were begging for a perm. At 11 years old, I was pleading with...
