5 Ways to Teach Your Daughter to Love Her Natural Hair

1BlessedNatural: 5 Ways to Teach Your Daughter to Love Her Natural Hair (photo cred: William Murphy via Flickr under CC by SA 2.0 ) There are so many images of beauty that are pushed in front of our faces as women, and these images can greatly affect our daughters, nieces, sisters etc. However, there are ways to teach them how to love and appreciate themselves, especially their natural hair. They include the following: 1. Do their hair in cute natural hairstyles. Every time my nieces finish getting their hair done, they love their styles. Sometimes they hate getting their hair done, but they hold their head high and smile in the mirror when it's done. 2. Compliment them. Tell them often that her hair is beautiful, and take pictures of it. 3. Teach them how to take care of her natural hair. Your daughter can start doing her own hair when she reaches 8 or 9 years old. Show her how to section and detangle it. She can also do simple styles like ponytails and ...

Payless "Back to School" Commercial Features Natural Hair Character

1BlessedNatural: Payless "Back to School Commercial" Features Natural Hair Character (photo cred: Payless) Payless recently released a new back to school commercial that features an animated character who has natural hair. She is a young girl with brown skin and a cute twist out. She is wearing a white tank top, pink skirt, black backpack, and Payless shoes. I think the character is great because girls can relate to her. The commercial promotes Payless' "Back to School" sale that ends next week. It's always good to see natural hair represented in a positive way. Earlier this year, Dreamworks released an animated movie called HOME that featured a curly haired character. 1BlessedNatural: 1BN Kids: Upward French Braid & Cornrows with Bun Style Happy Friday, my blessed naturals! What a blessing it is to make it to Friday! LOL Big and Little Sister Natural recently rocked some cute styles for their first couple of weeks back to school. For their first day back, Big Sister Natural (BSN) wore her hair loose back, and Little Sister Natural (LSN) wore her hair in two pony tails with flexi rod curls. 1BlessedNatural: Little Sister Natural's flexi rod curls. We forgot to take a picture after it dried. 1BlessedNatural: BSN's hair for the first day of school  This week, their mom sent me a photo of BSN's hair in an upward french braid with 4 cornrows into a bun at the top of her head. BSN's hair was already straight from being blow dried the week before last. The style took about 40 minutes to complete. Grape seed oil was applied to her strands before styling. Mini Twists with Braided Roots Protective Style

1BlessedNatural: Twists with Braided Roots Protective Style Hey, my blessed naturals! This past Sunday, I did my natural hair in the mini twists with braided roots protective style. I don't know why it has taken me so long to do them. I love the twists with braided roots because they last longer. Plus, they don't get as frizzy as the plain twists when you wash them. They took me about 9 hours to complete them. I planned to wash and band my hair on Saturday, but I ran out of time. So, I washed and blow dried my hair on cool . I normally just finger part my hair as I go along, but this time I grabbed large horizontal sections and then finger parted them. I feel like it made time go faster. 1BlessedNatural: Mini Twists with braided roots in a bun (no hair added0 Have you tried doing twists with braided roots? Mini Twists in Progress

1BlessedNatural: Mini Twists in Progress Hey, my blessed naturals! Two weeks ago, I put my hair in some mini twists, and I still have them in my hair... I washed them on Monday or Tuesday of this week. I plan to take them out this weekend, but I wanted to share with you a couple of photos of the twists while I was completing them. I usually apply enough Cantu Creamy Hair Lotion to make each section a little damp, but this time I applied it mostly to my ends. Check out my video tutorial below, if you haven't already! Protective Styling Plans for the Rest of the Summer

1BlessedNatural: Protective Stylng Plans for the Rest of the Summer Happy Saturday, my blessed naturals! As you all may know, I've been cornrows and twists for the past 3 1/2 months with small breaks in between. Last night, I took my last set out (for awhile). Tomorrow, I plan to install some mini twists and wear them for the rest of the summer. I will redo them every 1 1/2 weeks. The pic above is of my hair while I was taking out the cornrows last. My hair has grown a lot, but some of my edges came out.  I try not to make the cornrows to tight, but my edges are fragile and don't play that! LOL. So, the mini twists will help because they don't don't put any stress on them. I will keep you all updated! What natural hairstyle(s) do you plan to wear for the rest of the summer?   Related Articles: New Video: Rubber Band and Cornrow and Twist Updo                              After Protecti...
