My TWA Twist Out

I created chunky two strand twists Hey everyone, I have been rocking my TWA (Teenie Weenie Afro) for the summer, and I love it! Besides doing the Pineapple method with my hair, I have been doing chunky twist outs... I started by finger parting my hair. After putting a little bit of coconut oil on it, I grabbed big sections and twisted them. Chunky twists  I slept in a satin bonnet. In the morning I gently took the twists out with my fingers. I rubbed more coconut oil on my hair, and used a wide-tooth comb to rake through my roots to hide the parts. After putting Eco Styler Olive Oil gel around my edges, I threw on a headband and was out the door! :-) Results of my Twist Out

The Pineapple Method for Natural Hair

The Banding (Stretching) Technique for Natural Hair

Hey everyone, I have been seeing videos and blogs about the Banding technique for natural hair. I have problems with shrinkage. So, I've decided to try it. I performed this after deep conditioning, shampooing, and moisturizing my hair.  Here are the materials that I used (you may find others that work better for you): -Wide-tooth comb- dollar store -Cloth bands (without the metal) or the Ouchless bands by Goody - dollar store -Thick little bands shown in the picture to the left--(I soaked them in Olive Oil) dollar store -Deep Conditioner - a good moisturizer 1. I soaked my bands in oil before using them. This was to prevent breakage.  2. I applied a deep conditioner, cream, and oil to the section and combed through. My hair was damp, not wet. 3. Comb the damp section. Put a thick band around the base of the section. (not too tight) 4 Then take a small, thin band and put it diagonal down the section of your hair. You should have a "pigtail", sticking...

Little Girls & Natural Hair

One day, I overheard a conversation between a little girl and her aunt (or caregiver). The little girl told her aunt that someone she knew was African American and had "good hair."Her aunt (or caregiver) quickly shot her down saying all black people had bad hair (but used different words). She said they had "slave hair". I sat there thinking about the damage the lady had done to this little girl's (already jaded) thinking. Not only did the woman's statement add to the little girl's hair complex, but it also revealed the woman's self hate of natural Black or African hair and her own hair.     Every time I hear someone use the phrase "good hair," I'm taken back by it. I have to remind myself that even though there are many Black people that have grown to love our hair, there are many people that still have not gotten there yet. Many of these same people have passed this onto their children, just as the woman did to her niece. ...

Headbands & TWAs

I needed a hair accessory fast for my TWA! I tried my small satin head band, and then the one in the picture above. I was hesitant about using stretchy (Lycra) headband because it pulls your hair. I rubbed coconut oil around my hair where the headband would rest. I was happy with the look. But, I don't think I will be using them too much.

My Fro Update

My Fro 3 months after Big Chop  Hey everyone, Last night, I decided to stretch my hair after my wash. I did something similar to the Pineapple method. I parted my hair in about 8 small sections. It was similar to the method Dejah used called "Pineappling."I moisturized my hair using Coconut Oil (too much of it lol), shea butter, and IC Hair Polisher.  I grabbed the hair and twisted it around like a pin curl (in each section) and put a bobby pin in it. I will post pictures of the method soon. I was very happy with the results. But, I used too much of the Coconut Oil. I learned some great tips from "The Natural Haven ." about using Coconut Oil as a moisturizer.
