How to Retain Length of Natural Hair

1BlessedNatural: Ways to Retain Length When we talk about natural hair, we often talk about long hair and length retention. Many of us naturals struggle with length retention. We may feel like our hair is growing very slow or not growing at all. You may ask, "What products can I use to make my hair grow?" The truth is unless you have an underlying health issue, your hair is growing. Hair grows 1/2 inch or more per month. That number may increase due to genes, diet, and lifestyle. You may just be having problems retaining length. Here are the ways to retain length: 1. Moisturize and seal. Our strands tend to be dry. Because our ends are the oldest part of our hair, they are more prone to dryness. When you moisturize and seal your hair, focus on the ends. The most inexpensive moisturizer is water.  My favorite moisturizer to use is Cantu Creamy Hair Lotion. My favorite oil to seal in the moisture is coconut oil. Oils help to lock in he moisture in your h...

Little Girls' Long Rubber Band Twists

1BlessedNatural: Little Girls' Long Rubber Band Twists Happy Sunday, my blessed naturals, I hope you all are enjoying your day! This weekend, I got a chance to snap some photos of 2 of my nieces' long twists. You may remember an article I did back in April which included photos of their hair. This time, Big Sister and Little Sister were rocking medium-size rubber band (two-strand) twists. Their mom said it took 4 hours to complete both of the girls' hair. Although the twists look tight, they're really not. Mom used a product called Nature's Natural Carrot Hair Oil with Shea Butter and Vitamin E on their hair while twisting it. She says the key is that she kept her hands oily while twisting. Keeping the girls' hair in protective styles have greatly helped retain their length. Here are some more pictures of their hair: 1BlessedNatural: Big Sister Natural's Rubber Band (two-strand) Twists 1BlessedNatural: Little Sister Natural's...

Mini Twists, Trim, and Pin Curl Out

1BlessedNatural: Mini Twists, Trim, and Pin Curl Out Hey, my blessed naturals! I hope you all had a great weekend. This weekend, I installed mini two-strand twists because I needed a trim. I don't remember the last time I trimmed my hair! lol. My ends were looking raggedy. This set of twists took me 7-8 hours. Because I banded my hair on Friday, it was stretched for my twists. I used my mixture of Cantu Creamy Hair Lotion, Mixed Chicks Leave-In Conditioner, and coconut oil for my twists. Products from Amazon I used: 1BlessedNatural: I usually start my twists in the back. 1BlessedNatural: All done! You can see the ends of my twists need to be trimmed. 1BlessedNatural: In order to trim my ends, I usually put my hair in two ponytails. I pull down 1 twist and trim the end. Then, I do the next twist until I'm finished.  1BlessedNatural:... my trimmed ends. Not too bad! I'd rather lose length... 1BlessedNatural: ...two...

Update on C's Natural Hair: Curls Poppin'

C said she like her curls parted on the side and hanging down. Hey, my blessed naturals! Back in April , I told you all that my sister, C's hair broke off since wearing her natural hair out. Her plan was to wear wigs for 6 months to give her hair a rest and retain more length. She has kept her natural hair in a beehive cornrow underneath her wigs, and I'm happy to report that her hair is back to being healthy, and her curls are poppin'! The main issue C has with her hair is that she think it's too fine and thin (partly due to Traction Alopecia ). However, I think she still has a nice amount of hair. After washing and conditioning her hair, she parted it on the side and let her curls hang. C said she really likes her new style. Now that she's found a style she really likes, she can rock it confidently. (smile). Her plan is to continue to wear the wigs as her protective style until next summer. The picture above was taken after she applied the Silicon...
