Dear 1BlessedNatural, I'm Tired of Doing My Kids' Hair!

Dear 1BlessedNatural, I'm Tired of Doing My Kids' Hair! Hey, my blessed naturals, Yesterday, I had a conversation with my nieces' mom because she was thinking about perming my 9-year old niece's hair. Many of you have seen previous articles about my nieces, Big Sister Natural and Little Sister Natural's hair which is thick and long. Their mother knows how to keep their natural hair healthy. Her problem is that she will soon have 3 children, and she doesn't think she will not have the time to do the girls' hair on top of taking care of a newborn. She also plans to let the baby's hair grow out, making 3 heads of hair to do, eventually. This is an issue that many busy moms with children, (especially more than one) face. Although a perm may seem like aN easy choice, it may come with a price of your children's self-esteem and health. There are better ways to remedy the problem. Teach Your Child to Do Their Own Hair By the time you...

Lupita Nyong'o on Sesame Street: The Best Way to Teach a Child the Beauty in Skin!

Lupita Nyong'o' and Elmo on Sesame Street This week on Sesame Street, actress Lupita Nyong'o gave Elmo a lesson about "loving the skin you're in." In a less than 2 minute segment, Nyong'o appeared on camera wearing a  pretty multicolored, sleeveless dress. She began by explaining the functions of the skin to Elmo. He then realizes Nyong'o has "beautiful brown skin." Lupita Nyong'o then explains that skin comes in all types of beautiful shades and colors. I love Lupita Nyong'o's way of explaining beauty because it's the perfect message to send to young children. Elmo realizes that he has beautiful red skin. Nyong'o and Elmo ended the segment by stating they both love their own skin. This lesson teaches children their beauty and also shows them the beauty of other races and tones that are different from their own. I think the conversation between Nyong'o and Elmo is the perfect way for a parent to ex...

My Interview with "America's Supernanny" Deborah L. Tillman

Deborah L. Tillman is best known as THE parenting expert on Lifetime's   hit show, "America's Supernanny" . Along with being America's favorite "supernanny", Tillman is also the owner of 3 childcare centers in Alexandria, Virginia, and the author of the book, Stepping Out on Faith: How to Open a Quality Childcare Center. She also holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Administration and Master's Degree in Early Childhood Special Education. Last week, I received the blessing of interviewing this inspirational woman. Although Tillman is not natural, she says she will get there one day. Because she has a soft hair texture, she only gets a perm every 4-6 months. But, she doesn't like them at all. They do help her get through the summer months. Tillman says when she goes natural, she will be visiting my blog to find out what to do. I'm going to hold her to it. 1BN: So, about "America's Supernanny"... There's s...
