Now, the new natural hair inspired trend is faux locs or temporary dreads protective style. Faux locs have been around since the popularity of locs in the 1970s . Back in February, K.C. Undercover actress Zendaya stepped out on the Oscars red carpet with the Lisa Bonet inspired hairstyle. In the '90s, Bonet wore her natural hair in medium size locs with the top section pulled back into a ponytail, and she still wears her locs today. Crochet braids consist of your own hair being cornrowed (usually straight back) and then extensions are added to it using a latch hook. This is a great protective style and alternative for anyone who does not want to wear wigs, sewn-in weaves, or braid/twist extensions. Because the hair extensions are latched onto your cornrows, crochet braids allow your scalp to breathe. Because I was in a bit of a hurry, I didn't get to ask Shantell a lot of questions about her hair. She was rocking a thick head of black and honey-blonde Marley hair. Ibtihaj was searching for a protective style and decided to get the "Cornrowed Mohawk Cinnabun" style. She says that she liked the fact that it was a cute and simple style. Before styling, Ibtihaj's hair was stretched. After applying a homemade Shea Butter mixture, Kinky-Curly Knot Today, leave-in conditioner was applied to her hair while it was being cornrowed.
