1BlessedNatural Myth Busters #1: Baby Oil is Good for My Hair

Happy Tuesday everyone! Today I am introducing a segment called "1BlessedNatural Myth Busters." I will be debunking common myths about natural hair. Myth #1: Baby Oil is good for my hair. 1BN: Baby Oil is not good for hair because it contains an ingredient called mineral oil. Although mineral oil is often used in hair and skin products, it is not a good thing to put in your hair. The Merriam Webster Dictionary defines mineral oil as " an oil of mineral origin; especially : a refined petroleum oil used especially as a laxative." Mineral oil is also found in petroleum jelly. It is not a moisturizer. If you apply mineral oil to dry hair, your hair will look shiny but it will be dry underneath. If you apply the product to your hair, you cannot apply a moisturizer on top of it, because it will lock out the moisture. You will need to wash your hair before applying another product that will moisturize your hair. On the other hand, mineral oil locks in moi...

Oiling My Scalp

Happy Tuesday everyone! If you've read my past posts, then you know I have issues with dry scalp. For the past several months, I have been using Tea Tree Oil in my Castile soap mixture, and it's helped a lot. Recently, my scalp started getting dry again. I started using Olive Oil in a squeeze bottle to oil my scalp, and  I love it! After I wash my hair, I part my hair into big sections. I apply a moisturizer and Coconut oil (to seal my ends). Then I part the big sections into smaller sections and allow a little of the Olive oil to flow onto my scalp. You have to be careful because you can end up with greasy hair. As far as my hair goes, it is usually still a little damp when I apply the oil to my scalp. By the time my hair dries, a lot of the oil has absorbed into my hair and scalp. I purchased this squeeze bottle as part a travel pack of bottles at a dollar store. What's is your favorite kind of oil(s) to use on your hair and scalp?

What's Going on with Natural Hair and Pomades?

I have been noticing the increase in the amount of pomades on the natural hair market. I was wondering a possible reason why this could be happening, when many pomades (especially commercial ones) contain petroleum jelly. As a natural, I already know that petroleum (or petrolatum) jelly is not my friend because it can clog the pores of my scalp. But, not all pomades contain this ingredient. They may also contain wax. The idea of not using pomades on my scalp is far from the one instilled in me and most African Americans as a kid to "grease my scalp". The good thing is that there are other possible uses for pomades that contain petroleum jelly, and I will discuss it a little later. Dictionary.com defines the word "pomade" as being "a scented ointment, especially one used for the scalp or dressing the hair." The most important word is "dressing". Most pomades are used for styling purposes. Because they are heavier than most hair products, they...

Ways to Keep Tangles to a Minimum

Happy Sunday everyone! I hope that everyone is having a good day. Please keep the families of the Connecticut shooting victims in your prayers. Thursday I co-washed my hair to remove the wrap lotion from the rollerset. My hair was softer, but t probably will be even better when I shampoo it. I did a two-strand bantu knot out. I liked the definition in the picture above. Lately, I have been really trying to keep my tangles to a minimum, and I figured I would share what I have learned. Detangle Properly You may use your fingers, wide-tooth comb, or a brush. I usually detangle my hair while it is wet with conditioner or shampoo. I go through section by section slowly from root to tip. I was using a Gabriela (Denman-like) brush every time. But I think that started to put too much stress on my strands, so I use it once in a while now.  Keep Your Hair Stretched Keeping you hair stretched is a good way to keep your strands from wrapping around each other and tangling. ...
